Eight Heads in a Duffle Bag. . .

It has been a long, long, time since my last post. . . I recently finished a head painting class. Today I've posted several paintings from that class.

These are quick studies, with a 1 hour time limit. (that is, when I can make myself stop after an hour. Usually about 1 1/2 hours.)

My first assignment was a self portrait using the "wipe-out" method. This "hour" study involved laying down a neutral tone. I would paint in the the dark values and using a cloth, to wipe out the lights and middle values.

Me (wipe-out)

The textural look to the paint, is from the oil absorbing into the paper, making it difficult to completely wipe out. I didn't properly prepare the paper. Although it was a complete accident, I like how it looks. So I have used this "mistake" a couple times since.

Old Stuff

Here are a few drawings that I did a couple of years ago. New work is coming, but I am posting my favorite old pieces, while I finish the new pieces.

Funerary Statuary

Not to sound morbid, but I find funerary monuments to be very fascinating. Maybe it's my inner goth trying to come out. I took these at Provo Cemetery.

This is a study for "You are, what you eat." In the finished painting, he will be transforming into a TV set, and his face will be television static.
