I've Got a Fever! Christopher Walken

Sorry it's been so long since my last post. I've been busy creating and not posting. I've been doing a lot of traditional work– Ink and water color. But I now have plenty to post for the next couple of months.

Here's my Christopher Walken. It is ink wash on water color paper. I'm pretty happy how to came out, so I may scan and color it digitally.

Thanks for looking!

Riddle Me This, Batman!— Frank Gorshin

I spent last night watching “The Dark Knight”, while sketching Frank Gorshin— The Riddler, from the 1967 Batman Tv shim and movie.

I used pencil on white canvas-paper. The green hue is a happy coincidence from the photography. Because green is his signature color, I kept it.

Goodbye Robin Williams. . . work in progress

When I found out about the death of Robin Williams, like most of you, I was shocked. I'm not much of a writer. So, nothing I write could possibly do justice to his greatness. But as a fan I had to do something. Obviously, it's not finished, but it's coming along. I'll post it when it's complete.

Here's a bit of late night sketching, while watching "Quantum of Solace." I sketched it on Canvas Paper with pencil and Prismacolor.

Now I'm going to sleep. . .

"I'm gonna whittle yuh inta kindlin'!" Tom Waits work in progress

Here's a caricature of one of my favorite (of many) musicians, Tom Waits. His sound is like a guttural blues with a band from another planet. If you've never heard his music, here's a clip of him performing. Wow, very interesting!

This is just a detail of his face. I have a bit of a way to go with it

"Which Lo Pan? Little old basket case on wheels or the ten foot tall roadblock?"

I have too many projects, too much to do. . . So here's a quick post. The value block-in is complete. I'll have more details and surprises when I toss in the color.

"Shut up, Mr. Burton! You are not brought upon this world to get it!"

"Indeed!" - Lo Pan: Progress Value Painting (Detail)

Hiya Folks! I have to drop all personal project to get ready for the Salt Lake Comic Con in September. So here is one of my Comic Con pieces– David Lo Pan from Big Trouble in Little China. I have a month and a half, and about five paintings to finish. Hopefully I'll have a quick turnover.

This is just a detail of the entire portrait. So far, I'm pretty happy with it.

The World's Greatest Sinner: Timothy Carey

I've been watching a lot of early Stanley Kubrick films. Films like Killer's Kiss, Paths of Glory, The Killing, and Dr. Strangelove.  There's a character actor in Paths of Glory and The Killing named Timothy Carey. He is one of the most bizarre actors ever. He usually speaks through gritted teeth. I mean he hardly ever opens them. He always adds the weird to every character he plays. Here's a scene from a John Cassavetes film, Minnie & Moskowitz. He auditioned for the boss in Reservoir Dogs. But Tarantino was afraid to work with him. But he dedicated it to Carey and several of his cinematic influences.

Carey directed a a 1962 film, The World's Greatest Sinner. It's a low, low, low budget movie, scored by a young, pre-Mothers Frank Zappa. It offended 1962 audiences so bad, it was not theatrically released. It's so rare and obscure, I've never scene it.

Any way for your pleasure, here's a caricature of late, great, and wacko Timothy Carey.

Thanks for looking. . . and sorry about the long windedness.

Voldemort Schmoldevort! - Work in Progress

Here's a quick post. This is very early in the process and you may have a guess on what I'm painting. But you're only half right. Jeez I'm sick! There is something definitely wrong with this concept. I'll post the surprise later.

By the way, my website is now live– www.kylewigginsart.com

A Brush & Frank Zappa– No Commercial Potential

Here's another go a at brush & ink. I think I'm getting better at it. For this one I sketched one of my favorite musicians– Frank Zappa! It started as a pencil sketch on Canson Canvas Paper. Then I taped the paper down and laid down light ink washes to build up value. Then I finished it with pen and ink for dark detail, and white Prismacolor or Chinese White watercolor for added white.

Quick Javier Bardem sketch

I'm working on a set of paintings based on James Bond Villains. So here's a quick sketch of Javier Bardem as Silva from Skyfall. Wow I drew'm ugly. Just look at him with his big black eyes. I'm still in the early stages of this project. I still need to decide how many paintings and which villains to include. I'll keep you posted.

I would love to hear suggestions on who you'd like to see. Thanks for looking!

Little Mermaid Coloring Book– A Work in Progress

This is a page from a Little Mermaid coloring book that I've been working on. I took a page from the book, scanned it, and now I'm coloring it digitally. So I've had to make of the lighting and color scheme of the line art. I'm not done with it yet. I'm sort of making it up as I go along. But I like how it's coming out so far. I'll post it when it's done.

"Take your stinking paws off me you damn dirty ape!"– Dr. Zaius in Brush & Ink

"His Destiny!"
Here's another Brush and Ink picture. Last night I watched the original Planet of the Apes (1968), so I painted this. I should probably also paint a Cornelius and Zira as well. In fact I should paint an entire poster!

For supplies I used; Princeton 50/50 rounds #5, #0/3 rounds, 3/4" wash brushes, Higgins black India ink, and Winsor Newton Chinese white watercolor on a sheet of 136 lb. Canson Canva-Paper.

Brush & Ink Practice

I've never been good working with brush and Ink. I had a go at it this morning, and here is the result. I'm pretty happy with it. But I still need a lot of practice. You'll see more of these from me. I've been spending so much time working digitally. But recently, I've decided that I need more practice in working traditional.

For supplies I used; Princeton 50/50 rounds #5 and #0/3, Higgins black India ink, and a white Prismacolor pencil on a sheet of 136 lb. Canson Canva-Paper. My reference was a sketch of a mustachioed man from Drawing the Head and Hands by Andrew Loomis.

"Ba-Dee-Ba-Dee-Ba-Dee. . . Ba-Don Knotts Folks!" Complete

© 2014 Kyle Wiggins, All rights reserved.

Here is my finished Don Knotts caricature. Well, it's supposed to be Don Knotts– or perhaps it's Steve Buscemi. I could also add a pencil mustache and he'd be John Waters!

He's based on a sketch from a couple of years back. You can see the original on my Caricatures post from March 2012.

A Girl in a Turban, Speed Painting

Sorry it's been a couple of weeks since my last post. I've decided to post something different this week. You're probably sick of all of my Keith Richards posts. Don't worry, you'll be Keef free until he's completely finished. Here is a speed painting of a girl in a turban.  I worked on this for about an hour. I like how it's coming out, so I'm going to tighten it, add some color, and finish it up.

Thanks for looking, and bearing with my rambling.
Have a great week!

"Ready Freddie!" Freddie Mercury Sketch

It was very slow at work Thursday. So I sketched Freddie Mercury on the back of a misprinted MacBook pricing sheet. As I was sketching, I absolutely hated it. But looking at it the last couple of days, it has started to grow on me. "Now I'm here!"

Paint it Black - Monochromatic Keef is Complete

I'm about ready to start adding color. Obviously there are more details to add, finishing the guitar, shoes, hair, jewelry, etc. . .  But I have the basic values down. I will throw in more details as I add color. Most of this layer will be covered up by the time it's complete.

Keith Richards - Still Cranking Away (Detail)

Cropped Detail
Once again I'm pointing out that this is a personal project that I'm making up as I go along. So, after I've gone way too far on the face, I've finally decided what I want to do with the rest of it. I've started to block in the rest of it. Then after I've finished the under-painting, I'll start adding color. Wow, his right hand is bigger than his head!

Once again, thanks for looking!

Ringo: Stage II - Tightening the Speed Painting

I've been working more on my Ringo. I made a crummy pencil sketch several months ago. Then I started over and did a 1 hour speed painting.  So now I'm spending more time on the speed painting, by fixing the values, tightening the loose shapes, adding details, and improving the caricature. It's still far from done. But I thought it was a good time for another progress pic. (also partly because I haven't posted in a while)

Keef Continued

I've finally had a chance to work on my Keith Richards again. This is a personal project I work on whenever I get a chance. I'll just noodle it here and thereBut with everything else I'm working on, I usually don't get the chance. Someday I'll actually finish it.

"Put up your Dukes, Pilgrim!" John Wayne Caricature

I found something that I thought would be fun to share. I was digging through some old sketches, found this guy. I did this caricature of Rooster a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, he seems to be a bit snockered. I can picture him drunkenly driving his horse, with the reins in his teeth, while firing off his Winchester and Colt Navy. Wow, that was a great movie!

By the way. Check out my new website kylewigginsart.com!

Marlon Brando "YOU CAN ACT LIKE A MAN!" - Process

Here's a Marlon Brando caricature I'm working on. I have a long way to go to finish it. I haven't posted in a while. I've recently changed from pc to Mac. Because of the change, I've had to upgrade from Adobe CS4 to CS6. . . aaaand I'm not used to using it yet. But it's getting there. . .

Nicholas Cage “Boy, you got a panty on yo' head!”

When people tell me that Nicholas Cage is a bad actor, I tell them to watch ‘Raising Arizona’. It is one of my favorite movies. It's one of my goto movies when I paint. Because of the great one liners, I don't even have to watch it.

Here is Mr. Cage as H.I. McDunnough.

Walken on the wild side!

Here's a quick sketch of Christopher Walken from 'A View to a Kill'. For a James Bond movie, it was ok. But of course, Chris Walken as the villain, was brilliant! I think I wanna do a painting of this.

Frankenstein Complete

Big apologies for my neglect of posting on the blog. I've recently moved and I've been updating my studio.

I posted an earlier carnation of this painting last year. But I've been sorting through my work, finding stuff to post on my new webpage. (which I'm hoping will be live, before the end of the month) So I've been taking my best stuff, and adding a few finishing touches. I worked on this one a few hours today. I think I can declare it complete.

Thanks for looking! Expect more posts and updates on my new .com over the next few weeks.

Are Elephants Falling From the Sky?!!!

This is a sketch I did this evening. I'm pretty happy with it. I've wanted to do a painting of this for a while. This is just a component of the whole idea. I'll post the final composition when I'm about ready to start painting.
